 ARLINGTON, Va., May 12, 2009 - Military Spouse magazine and the United Services Automobile Association named Tanya Quiero the 2009 Military Spouse of the Year May 7.
One finalist was selected from each branch of service based on voting from readers and an outside military spouse selection committee. Quiero, wife of Gunnery Sgt. Jose Quiero, was selected from more than 600 nominees based on her volunteerism, personal sacrifice, education and career pursuits.
Although the Edenton, N.C., native has been a Marine spouse for nearly 13 years, she also has her own tie to the Corps. In 2007, after nearly 13 years on active duty, she decided to get out of the Marine Corps to dedicate more time to her children.
The mother of three said her own service has given her a clearer understanding of her husband and his obligation to the Corps.
“Tanya’s devotion to her family and others in need makes her a most deserving recipient of the [award],” said Babette Maxwell, co-founder and executive editor, Military Spouse magazine. “Without hesitation, Tanya puts others before herself, sees and fulfills needs of those around her and works for the betterment of community.”
Quiero has volunteered much of her time as a victim’s advocate with the Onslow County Women's Shelter, a mentor with the Lifestyle, Insight, Networking, Knowledge and Skills Program and as a key volunteer. She told Military Spouse magazine that she would like to use her new title to bring awareness to the unique challenges that military families encounter. Quiero also encourages young Marine families to maintain an open mindset and to plan for the unexpected.
"Plan as best you can for everything you can encounter,” she said. "Because there will be [unforeseen] challenges."
Quiero and her family reside in Jacksonville, N.C. She is currently working on her doctorate degree in organization and management and balancing her volunteer work and family life with a full time job as a human resources specialist in labor and employee relations.
